It was cold at night, but I could sleep with a down jacket and a sleeping bag.

In the morning.

The clouds in the East sky prevents the Morgenrot, but still good dawn.

Mt. Ontake with its plume.

Sunrise to Hotaka summits.

And Mt. Yarigatake.

It was not the Morgenrot, but still it was beautiful enough.

The camp site at Mt. Chogatake.

It was very comfortable.

We packed and left at 7:55.

Nice view of Hotaka summits.

Beautiful colored leaves down there.

Nice view.

The trail to Mt. Jonen was not just ascending but also descending in the forest. It is really annoying but,

This time we enjoyed the colored leaves.

Approaching to Mt. Jonen.

And arrived at the peak at 10:40.

It took 2 hours 50 minutes, while the standard duration is 4 hours half.

We have been here exactly a year ago.

Mt. Yarigatake.

We stayed for 15 minute with such nice views and started descending at 11:07.

Jonen-Nokkoshi (saddle) at 11:45.

We miss such nice views.

Walking with colored leaves.

This trail did not have so much fan last year, but this year the nice views with colored leaves catch our eyes. We had to pay attention onto the trail from slipping away.

A short break at a creek.

Nice breeze.

The later part is very annoying with such rocky roads.

Arrived at Ichinosawa at 13:45, 2 hours 40 minutes from the peak, while the standard duration is 3 hours 55 minutes.

This trekking was short, but very much enjoyable one with nice views. This must be the best trekking in this season.

On Friday I visited Mitake, where I used to paddle a few years ago.

On Saturday we woke up at 6am. We were driven to Sawando, a bus station to Kamikochi.
The drive was a little longer, two hours. We arrived at Sawando at 9am.

We take a bus here. On the way here it was drizzling, but finally we got the blue sky.

Kamikochi.

We started walking at 10:05.

Kappabashi, a famous viewing spot.

1 hour walk to Tokusawa.

while the standard duration is 2 hours.

Early lunch.

I like curry with rice here.

After lunch we started climbing at 11:41 to Mt. Chogatake.

Steep trekking,

which takes us to the mountain efficiently,

and arrived at Mt. Nagagabe at 13:56 in 2 hours 15 minutes while the standard duration is 3 hours 45 minutes.

From here we enjoyed the nice view of colored leaves.

This is awesome.

Beautiful pound.

Tadpoles were swimming.

I was afraid the temperature goes down.

We reached to the ridge line.

Very rich views with Mt. Yarigatake and Hotaka summits.

Arrived at Mt. Chogatake at 14:45. We slowed down, but arrived in 45 minutes, while the standard duration was 1 hour.

We enjoyed the nice view of North Japan Alpine mountains.

The camp site was a little busy, but enough to find a good location.

Cycling-Day 13-Tokyo Temple and Shrine(40.5km)

Day 13
148days for cycling, total distance 10,925.2km, total climb 152,148m
Tokyo Temple and Shrine 12:14-15:38
Distance today 40.5km, climb 545m, duration 2:21, avg speed 17.1km/h, burned 973kcal
Gear: Eurasia 520
Today's route

The trekking two days ago still affects on my muscles,  and I won't go far today.
I completely used up four-days-energy in the first two days for trekking, despite of the national holidays.

As the Japanese cultural courtesy, we have to return charms and amulets given from a temple or a shrine. I go and return them to there.

For the first I visited Meguro-Fudo. I live in neighborhood but I have never visited here.

I came to the gate four years ago but I could not go inside.

The signboard says this temple does not accept any charms or amulets issued by other temples.

The charms and amulets I have were issued by Koyasan-temple, and there is a branch in Shirokane.

Here is the Tokyo Branch of Koyasan temple.

I returned the charms and amulets successfully.

Just after the temple I met my high-school mate. The rejection of the charms at Meguro-Fudo takes me to the Koyasan-temple and I met him. I felt some fate led by the Buddha.

For the next I have to go to Yushima Shrine to return the charms issued there.

On the way I found the October Festival of German beer at Hibiya park.

I really regret the beer. Drink-and-ride is not allowed in Japan.

Yushima Shrine.

I returned the charms and the amulets.
Now the mission today is completed.

I went further a little.

Ikebukuro station.

After that I went to Okubo Korean town.

but the Korean restaurants were crowded and I could not eat.

Yoyogi Hachiman shrine had a festival.

Usually this place is very quiet but today it is busy.

Going to the South along Yamate-dori street and climbed up on Kamuro-zaka slope.

The sun light is milder. The sign of the autumn.

40km, a short ride.

Trekking-Day 9-Baba-Dani Onsen Spa-Sarukura(16.5km)

Beyond the Hakuba ridge from Baba-Dani Onsen spa to Hakuba village.

Day 9 Dani Onsen Spa-Sarukura 5:33-17:46
Distance today 16.5km, climb 2,020m, duration 12:11, avg speed 1.4km/h, burned 1,214kcal
Today's route
Continued from Trekking-Day 8-Mt.Karamatsu and Baba-Dani Onsen Spa(16.4km)

CAUTION! The duration in this article is due to my experiences and physical strength, and much shorter than the standard course time. Please plan by yourself considering your own experiences and physical strength when you plan to walk the course.

On the second day it would be a good idea to ride on Kurobe Gorge train on the way back. The station is 30 minutes walk from the Onsen, and it goes to Uozu city, along the Japan Sea.
But the hut master told me it would take a half day to Hakuba, and I would be arrive in later afternoon. Sounds like same time on my food.
Then I decided to walk back to Hakuba.

The route on the way back is from Baba-Dani Onsen spa through Mt. Shozu, Mt. Shirouma to Sarukura.

I woke up 5am and packed my tent.

Started walking at 5:30.

A long long walk has begun.

Steam of the spa.

It comes from the river.

Hakuba mountains are far far away.

It makes me depressed.

Walking through the forest.

The trail was not so comfortable. It was hot and no wind.

Good to see such nice views several times.

Interesting to see Hakuba mountains from backside.

Arrived at Kaerazu emergency hut in 4 hours and half, 30 minutes earlier than the standard duration. I realize this trail is not easy at all.

Water supply is available here.

The view became open after a while.

Baba-Dani Onsen is far down.

At 11:10 approached to Shozu ridge.

The bushes and grasses were colored.

Heading to Mt. Shozu.

I like this atmosphere.

Arrived at Mt. Shozu at 12:22, in 6 hours 50 minutes, while the standard duration is 7 hours half.
Slow pace.

I climbed 1800m high so far. The air became cold.

Baba-Dani is far far down.

I remember I saw this mountain in the morning. Nice to reach here.

I thought Mt. Hakuba would be close after Mt. Shozu, but it is still far.

The snow remained on the back bowl of Mt. Asahi.

I remember I skied down here about 10 years ago. At the time I was a beginner and I did not know the mountains.

Looking back at the ridge lines I walked on.

It was a long long trail.

At 14:00 I reached to the Hakuba side after Mt. Asahi, and

I realized Mt. Hakuba is far far away. I was very shocked.
I would rather go to Mt. Hakuba if the time would permit, but it seems impossible.

The last ascending for today.

Finally arrived to the cross point just under Mt. Shirouma at 14:30. It was just 30 minutes earlier than the standard duration in 9 hours 30 minutes.

Shirouma hut is just in front of me, but I had no energy to go.
And I did not have much time to go down.

Now I start descending to Sarukura.

Good to see the view of Mt. Shakushi.

The bushes are colored.

I had no energy to climb up but the descending was not too bad.

Putting crampons at Daisekkei (Large Snow Valley).

Arriving at Hakuba-jiri hut at 17:05.

And finally I reached to the goal, Sarukura hut at 17:46.

12 hours walk, ascending in 2000m and descending in 1600m from Baba-Dani Onsen spa.
I walked about 35km, ascending in 3400m and descending 3700m in two days.
I totally exhausted. The view at Shozu ridge line was beautiful, one trial is enough.
